It's "Talk Like William Shatner Day."
March 22nd...and he's 92 and still talking like William Shatner
I know some of you are my age and “Star Trek” (The Original Series) looms large in our memories.
I remember when my mom learned that this show was airing, she proclaimed, “At last a science fiction show for adults!”
My brother and I, ages 8 and 10, enjoyed the show as much as she did. And maybe I enjoyed in part because I was approaching puberty.
And in terms of getting crushes on people, I was Team Kirk. Not Team Spock. I’m not going to go into why. When I was a kid, I didn’t know why anything!
It wasn’t like I had to read every magazine article about him or kiss my pillow and moan into it “Oh Captain Kirk, I love you!”
It was a weird shift in perception: a sudden understanding of what I found attractive.
I can’t explain it any other way.
The feeling didn’t last, but every time I got a crush on someone, I wondered if it was because they reminded me of Captain Kirk.
Anyway, William Shatner has made a wonderful career for himself beyond “Star Trek,” and he has a great sense of humor about it.
Shatner’s recording career started in 1968. He doesn’t really sing, as much as recite Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.”
