Happy February!
Since January started, I’ve gotten ten new subscribers!
Therefore, I will donate to Pasadena Humane and the American Red Cross, Los Angeles Region, to help people and pets in the wake of the devasting wildfires.
Thank you for reading Z Words! I hope to publish work at least once a week on the weekend.
Z Words is free to read. I think most of my archive is also free to read. I welcome paid subscriptions, of course, but if you don’t feel like committing but like something so much you want to… you can buy me a cup of coffee.
I love February
Really. I love that it’s the shortest month, but it packs a lot in. For one thing, in this part of the world, you can tell by the light, where the sun sets and when that spring is coming.
The deep blue sky of winter softens in this light.
And even though we know spring is coming, it’s still possible we’ll have some heavy-duty winter storms! Snow days!
If you like (American) football, for real or ironically, the Super Bowl happens, and because I live in the Kansas City area, I am super aware of the Kansas City Chiefs. They’re in it again! I don’t know much about football, but I’ll probably watch and cheer on the Chiefs. It’s a pretty boring sport with lots of timeouts. I suppose that’s why they make a big deal of it all on Super Bowl day.
Feel free to disagree with me.
But… baseball, on the other hand. I think one reason I love baseball is because there’s a hell of a lot to read concerning it. I love reading. I fell in love with baseball reading about the Kansas City Royals — starting with Joe Posnanski’s* yearly predictions about them. Sorry that they were a mess during much of Joe’s time writing about them.
*Two things about Joe Posnanski: 1) He wrote The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O’Neil’s America 2) He writes about football, tennis, soccer, and other stuff. Not just sports.
Spring training starts on February 10th, the day after the Super Bowl. The beginning of the long baseball season. I don’t really pay attention to Spring Training games, but I love reading and thinking about all the possibilities the games show…
I love February for a magical reason. I became a mom, and gave birth to my son, in February. He will be 34 this year. That’s the age I was, when he was born, all pink and bright-eyed.
That’s enough of my crazy rapture about February. Don’t forget Valentine’s Day!
