We are going to Italy for a couple of weeks in September.
And we will be doing touristy things in Rome, Florence, and Venice. And this is how we prepare:
Oscar makes music playlists and finds a few bad words in Google Translate. To be fair, we help him find those words. Bad Parents!
I make music playlists too. I would like to include more opera.
When I was much younger, I studied voice and thought I might be an opera singer when I grew up. I took Italian in high school to help me with opera, and I needed the credits to graduate, AND I love learning languages.
I’m a nerd. I wanted to take Latin, but my high school did not offer it. One teacher said she would teach it if I got enough fellow students to sign up. I think I got 3 people to sign.
*sigh* Not enough.
I thought and still think: no problem, we’re going to Italy and I can still read, sing, and speak a little…
But Scott has taken the language prep to an all-time high! He had studied a little for a trip he took 30 years ago, approximately.
But this time, he wanted to do more than “brush up.” He started with podcasts, videos, and online courses, and added a tutor.
It was getting so he was speaking Italian all the time. I was *ahem* a little jealous and felt neglected.
To combat that neglected feeling I listened to some podcasts and watched some videos.
But then we started studying through a course together. È diventato davvero serio. It’s becoming truly serious.
Something that we do together, is a respite from other stuff going on this summer. I don’t do well with the heat and the call to have fun in the summertime!
Once you start adulting, and if you no longer follow a school schedule, you don’t get a summer break!!!!
I thought, why not take a break and do what I like to do? Learning a language, listening to music. Watching fun videos in Italian.
It’s a comedy and you can watch it with English subtitles on Netflix. The action takes place in Palermo, in Sicily where we’ll have to make a trip one of these days!
See you next time, friends! Subscribe and leave a comment in any language. Many thanks!

I'm going to Italy in December with my extended family, and I was proud of myself for adding Duolingo Italian to my daily Greek on the app. Clearly I need to up my game!
Che bel post! But you left out one of the most fun things about our Italian study — Lorenzo Baglioni's explanation of the subjunctive in song! https://youtu.be/8bfYQZPLCEA?si=20HLNUmiYonJlb4R
